What If I'm Claustrophobic During a Prostate MRI?

If you're claustrophobic, say so when you book the scan — not on the day. Given notice, this is almost always solvable. Your options usually include a mild oral sedative, a wide-bore scanner with noticeably more room, or having someone stay in the room with you. And one detail I tell patients that nobody seems to mention: for a prostate MRI, you go in feet-first. Your head stays near the opening for most of the scan. That fact alone settles a lot of men down. Imaging centers hear this constantly. Ask early, and they'll have real answers.
